Abstract
The European Space Agency is preparing for the launch of the first European Remote Sensing satellite, which will take place in 1990. The ERS-1 will carry on-board a set of active microwave sensors which will allow the collection of global geophysical information over the oceans as well as the imaging of selected coastal and land areas with high resolution. The main feature of this satellite is that the ground segment has been designed in order to offer a duality of services: there will be dissemination of the data within three hours of acquisition for near real time use; also, the data will be archived at specific centres for subsequent off-line precision processing.
