Banking System Modeling by Viable System Modeling (VSM)

Abstract

This paper attempts to design a viable system model for banking systems that are at the risk of losing their business because of the complexity of the business environment. The complex environment that organizations are facing is an uncertain situation in which banks and financial institutions are at the risk of losing their business. Organizational structure flexibility is required for their viability in the current situation so the VSM model proposed for the banking system. Systematic action research did at Tejarat bank as one of the major banks in Iran. The VSM model designed with Viplan methodology. The VSM model proposed for Tejarat bank. This model can be used for other banking systems. The VSM model can guarantee the viability of banking systems. Adaptability to a complex environment can be obtained via this cybernetics approach.

  1. TASCOI is a tool related to naming meaningful chunks of complexity in the world, on the other

    hand Checkland’s (1981) CATWOE is a tool related to naming ideas that might be relevant in the

    world (ideas to think about the world). In TASCOI the T stands for inputs that are transformed into

    outputs via a technological transformation process (e.g., raw materials into finished products), in

    CATWOE the T often stands for changes of actors’ appreciations (e.g., persons without appreciation

    about a situation to persons with an appreciation of this situation). CATWOE is coherent with

    a view that systems are mental constructs of possibilities in the informational domain; on the other

    hand TASCOI is coherent with the view that communications produce or might produce performative

    systems in the world, in the operational domain
