Abstract

Recording neural activity from multiple brain regions allows researchers to investigate the dynamic interactions between connected regions within a brain circuit. Pairing multisite recordings with circuit manipulation and behavior is a powerful approach that allows us to address hypotheses about the precise mechanisms underlying complex behaviors. There are, however, many technical challenges to each of these research methods, and feasibility issues can hamper progress especially when the three techniques are combined in one experiment. This chapter will detail the methods employed in my laboratory for performing neural recordings in conjunction with circuit manipulation and behavior. My hope is that this chapter will provide some guidance on basic good practices that can be scaled to many specific applications and adapted to incorporate new technological advances as they emerge.
