Sustainable Tertiary Educational Collaboration: Korea’s Shared Experiences and the Challenges

Sustainable Tertiary Education in Asia

Abstract

This chapter gives new perspectives on international educational collaboration from the experiences of the Republic of Korea as an emerging donor country. Education is a key element in sustainable development. As the successor of Education for All (EFA), the Incheon Declaration represents education for 2030, or learning for all. Korea has extended its cooperation with the educational sector in Asian countries based on their social and economic development, through activities such as exchange programs of human resources, scholarship programs, and development cooperation. After becoming a member of Development Assistance Committee (DAC) in 2010, Korea set up a new international development cooperation system and then contributed to countries in Asia as well as other regions for poverty reduction and inclusive growth. The international community has launched new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This paper introduces and shares the achievements of the cooperation program in tertiary education between Korea and Asia and suggests new approaches and methods to solve global issues in development cooperation in a new era of SDGs.
