Abstract
This chapter explores mediation competence through the design and implementation of a classroom intervention with a group of 28 pre-service teachers. Firstly, the concept of mediation competence is theoretically addressed and some recent studies regarding its development and possible applications are revised. Secondly, the potential of picture books and digital tools for mediation purposes is explained. After that, the design of the task is fully described, and the students’ productions are addressed by means of two examples. The results of the study show how the students evaluate the digital tools that they chose for the purpose of mediation and how they perceive the mediation task itself and its theme. In this regard, it must be mentioned that the participants’ views are generally positive in all the previous aspects, but some expectable controversial topics emerge in terms of the choice of the digital tools or the introduction of the theme of children refugees at early school levels.
