Dear Editor,

We would like to share ideas on “Estimation of Serum MicroRNA 21 as a Tumour Marker in Carcinoma Oesophagus [1]”. Soong et al. concluded that “MiR 21 levels can be used as a novel marker for assessing disease severity in carcinoma oesophagus [1]”. We agree that MicroRNA 21 might be a useful biomarker. Indeed, several MicroRNAs are proposed for usefulness for using as biomarker in cancer [2]. For oesophageal cancer, another possible mRNA biomarker is 331-3p [3]. Regarding the present report on using MiR21, it should note for possible confounding conditions. MiR21 might also be elevated in other medical conditions. Examples are diabetes and cardiac disorders, which are common clinical problems [4, 5]. Further studies to control and assess possible confounding effects from those medical conditions are interesting.
