Abstract

Advances in hot dip metallic coatings have been driven (1) by continuing demands to produce lighter and stronger automotive applications without sacrificing manufacturability, durability and cost and (2) the continuing progress in producing more durable coated steel sheet products for construction and electrical appliance applications. Recent technical advancements that continue to permit steel products to be the materials of choice for these applications are reviewed. These include new knowledge about the galvanizing of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) with ever-higher strengths, development of hot press formed steels protected with coatings with high zinc content and progress in alloy coating development.
