Definitions
The term microalgae has no taxonomic value and encompasses algal microorganisms with chlorophyll a and other photosynthetic pigments, which are capable of performing oxygenic photosynthesis, and their (systematic) characterization implies the consideration of a series of criteria (van den Hoek et al. 1995; Raven et al. 2001).
Microalgae are a great group of eukaryotic algae and prokaryotic cyanobacteria of variable size between 1 and 900 micrometers (10−6 m) that can grow in both salt and fresh water in large dimensions. Enabling its growth in the most diverse places and scales (Burlew 1953; Spolaore et al. 2006). According to Tomaselli (2004), these microorganisms traditionally have been classified according to the types of pigments, the chemical nature of the reserve products, and by the constituents of the cell wall.
