Definition
Values are defined as personally or socially desirable beliefs that go beyond specific situations and guide people’s behavior (Bourne and Jenkins 2013; Rokeach 1973). Following this definition of values, organizational values can be conceptualized as beliefs about socially or personally desirable end states or actions that are explicitly or implicitly shared by members of an organization (e.g., Schwartz 1992). In line with the general conceptualization of values, organizational values transcend single situations and are relatively stable over time (Schwartz 1999). According to Schein, values are based on “basic assumptions that a given group has invented, discovered, or developed in learning to cope with its problems of external adaptation and internal integration, and that have worked well enough to be considered valid” (Schein 1984, p. 3).
