Achelous (Аcheloos) – the largest river in Greece, which flows into the Gulf of Patras 6.5 km northwest of Cape Scrofa in the extreme southwest of the Balkan Peninsula in Western Greece. The length of the river is 217 km. It originates in the Pindus range at an altitude of 2000 m. The average width of the river is 90 m, depth is 2.7–7.3 m. The basin area is 6329 km2. In winter, it spills over the entire plain adjacent to the sea. The rise and fall of water in the river occurs unexpectedly. At the mouth of the river lies a low grassy islet, to the south and north of which there are two narrow entrances to the river (Fig. 1).
