Abstract

After being invented in 2012 by Wang’s group, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has been considered as a promising mechanical energy harvesting technology for alleviating the energy crisis in the new era. It exhibits extensive potential in converting low-frequency, random, and high-entropy mechanical energy available in our surrounding environment into usable electricity, driving personal electronics and various sensors extensively distributed in the era of the Internet of Things (IoTs). However, single TENG device sometimes cannot function stably as a reliable energy source affected by working conditions or external environment. With the purpose of broadening its application scenarios and improving output stability, integrating TENG with other energy harvesters into a hybrid system is a compelling solution. Solar cell (SC) features capturing sunshine energy for electricity generation, which is eco-friendly and cost-effective, whereas SC shows declining output dramatically when the sun is absent. This chapter summarized current research efforts focusing on integrating TENG and SC and analyzed its development process from several special perspectives: (1) ingenious integration of TENG and SCs, (2) special treated materials for performance enhancement, (3) improve the performance of TENG by photovoltaic effect, (4) all-in-one hybrid system for various energies harvesting, and (5) practical application of hybrid system in different scenarios. From the view of application, the hybrid system has access to superiority and stability demonstrated by the performance of charging energy storage unit and consequent constant discharge process. The present study will promote the progress of research concerning self-powered sensors and wearable/portable electronics.
