Definition
A homicide-suicide is an act of lethal violence that involves the intentional or nonintentional killing of one or more persons followed by the perpetrator’s suicide.
Introduction
Homicide-suicide (HS) acts are rare forms of lethal violence. Estimates indicate that in the United States, only 4% of the homicides registered annually are followed by the perpetrator’s suicide and only 1.5% of the annual suicides are committed by individuals who killed someone else before killing themselves (Large et al., 2009). Despite their rarity, homicide-suicide acts can have damaging social and public health consequences.
