Introduction
UNAIDS (2010) estimates that approximately 2.8 million of the 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide are 50 years and older (Nguyen & Holodniy, 2008), owing mostly to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART; e.g., Grabar, Weiss, & Costagliola, 2006), without which HIV is fatal. In the United States, the aging population accounts for approximately 13 % of the total AIDS cases (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008). HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, causes AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, by infecting vital cells in the human immune system such as the CD4+T cells, which can lead to the progressive failure of the immune system. The nature of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is changing as it is a chronic disease in developed regions of the world. As HIV/AIDS becomes a chronic disease among middle-aged and elderly populations, a special challenge to HIV/AIDS prevention will lie in disentangling the effects of HIV/AIDS independent of aging,...
