Building Simulation - Call for Papers: Special Issue on Innovative building façades for sustainable built environment: Materials, components and systems

Dear Colleagues,

Carbon emissions from building operations contribute to more than 20% of the total carbon emissions in society. Achieving carbon neutrality in the building sector requires great efforts to reduce building loads and promote technological innovation. Building façades exert a significant impact, with up to 70% influence on building loads, which also affects indoor thermal and visual comfort. Therefore, the advancement of high-performance innovative building façades is imperative for fostering a sustainable built environment.

Building façades include both transparent and opaque façades. The thermal and daylight transmission characteristics of transparent façades play a crucial role in regulating indoor heat and daylight gain, whereas opaque façades primarily influence the indoor thermal environment through heat transfer and thermal storage capabilities. Additionally, the emissivity of building façades passively contributes to the heat insulation and dissipation of buildings.

Innovative building façades, consequently, are becoming increasingly important and popular for the development of sustainable built environments. This special issue aims to collect scientific publications that document recent innovations in high-performance building façades, spanning materials, components and systems, to jointly contribute towards carbon neutrality in buildings. We welcome all researchers to contribute original articles and high-level reviews about but not limited to the following:

  • Advanced materials for thermal insulation, spectrum selective glazing, or moisture buffering of building façades
  • Innovative building components for building façades, including high-performance, adjustable and adaptive components
  • Innovative building façade systems for daylighting, shading, cooling, and power generation
  • Structure design, numerical model, experimental method, and performance optimization of building façades for sustainable buildings and built environments
  • AI and other advanced data-driven methods addressing structure design, model simulation, process control, and performance optimization of building façades

The peer review process of the submissions for this special issue is the same as the peer review process of the journal in general. Additionally, if the guest editor(s) authors an article in the special issue, they will not involve in the peer-review or decision of the article.

We sincerely invite you to submit your original work to this special issue and are looking forward to sharing your outstanding research outcomes with peers around the world. Upon its acceptance, the paper will go into production immediately. It will be published in the latest regular issue and presented on the specific Topical Collection webpage simultaneously. In regular issues, Topical Collection articles will be clearly marked.

Paper submission: When preparing your manuscript, please follow the Instructions for Authors of Building Simulation, which can be downloaded from the journal website (https://www.springer.com/journal/12273).
