Summary

BACKGROUND: The treatment of malignant neoplasms is continually progressing due to the development of new therapeutic strategies, agents and diagnostic facilities. METHODS: A survey of pathology-related surgical oncology. RESULTS: The role of surgical pathology in the multidisciplinary concert of tumour management is to provide morphological and biological information on surgically removed tumours that is required for an accurate diagnosis. Tumour staging (TNM-classification) and parameters known to be essential for treatment design are given particular emphasis. CONCLUSIONS: An understanding of surgical oncology greatly facilitates the pathologist's work, and the close collaboration of surgeons and pathologists is crucial to minimize mistakes and avoid misinterpretations.
