Values, intelligence and client behavior in career counseling: A field study

Abstract

We examine relations of values and intelligence to overt behavior in a field study of clients in career counseling (N=365). Eleven counselors reported their clients' independence, activity and insightfulness behaviors. As predicted, both values and intelligence correlated substantially with particular behaviors. Activity and independence correlated positively with self-direction and achievement values and negatively with conformity and tradition values. Independence correlated positively with maturity values as well. Insightfulness correlated positively with maturity values and negatively with conformity and tradition values. All three behaviors correlated positively with intelligence. Values predicted behavior over and above intelligence, but intelligence added to the prediction by values only for the clients of some counselors. Implications of the findings for research on values and behavior are discussed.

Résumé

Dans une étude de terrain, portant sur des consultants en conseil de carrière (N=365), on étudie les relations des valeurs et de l'intelligence avec le comportement manifeste. 11 conseillers évaluent les comportements des consultants du point de vue de l'indépendance, de l'activité et de la perspicacité. Conformément à l'hypothèse, les valeurs tout comme l'intelligence sont fortement corrélés avec des comportements spécifiques. L'activité et l'indépendance sont positivement corrélées avec les valeurs d'autonomie et d'accomplissement et négativement avec les valuers de conformité et de tradition. L'indépendance est aussi positivement corrélée avec les valeurs de maturité La perspicacité est corrélée positivement avec les valeurs de maturité et négativement avec les valeurs de conformité et de tradition. Les valuers prédisent le comportement indépendamment de l'intelligence et plus fortement qu'elle, mais l'intelligence améliore la prédiction par les valuers mais ceci seulement pour les consultants de certains conseillers. Les implications de ces résultats pour la recherche sur les valeurs et le comportements sont discutées.
