Summary

Fifty-two strains ofBacillus thuringiensis belonging to 13 serovars were tested on neonates of fall armyworm [Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith)] by contamination of the surface of a semisynthetic diet. Two strains ofB. thuringiensis var.kenyae and one ofB. thuringiensis var.tolworthi caused the highest mortality, followed by other strains fromkenyae, aizawai andkurstaki serovars. The less toxic strains belonged to thealesti, dendrolimus, sotto andcolmeri serovars. The sublethal activity of thekenyae, aizawai andkurstaki serovars delayed development of fall armyworm larvae. Thealesti, sotto andcolmeri serovars, however, did not produce this effect.
