Twenty Years of Research and Development on Soil Pollution and Remediation in China

Abstract

The intensive use of chemical pesticides has also resulted in serious environmental problems. Biodegradation of chemical pesticides and bioremediation of pesticide-contaminated sites by microorganisms is considered as the most effective, less-expensive, and non-secondary pollution method. In this article, the achievements in the lab for environmental microbiology in Nan**g Agricultural University will be summarized, including isolation and collection of high efficient pesticide-degrading bacteria, elucidation of the catabolic pathway of pesticides in microbes, cloning of the key gene(s) involved in pesticide degradation, the ecological process during biodegradation of pesticides, and removal of pesticide contamination by microbes.
