Abstract
This chapter will consider the preservation of cosmetics and toiletries by the control of microbial growth, where the following definitions apply:
Preservation. The growth of microorganisms will not occur in the product during its shelf-life and in consumer use.
Cosmetics. The word Cosmetics will be used to include toiletries i.e. have the definition of the EC Directive [1].
Microbial growth. The growth of those forms of life which are only visible to the naked eye when more than one is present e.g. a colony is forming.
Microbial stability. This may be defined as the resistance of a material to the growth of microorganisms.
