Genetic impacts of fish introductions: a perspective on African lakes

The Impact of Species Changes in African Lakes

Part of the book series: Chapman & Hall Fish and Fisheries Series ((FIFI,volume 18))

Abstract

Human activities have had profound impacts on almost all freshwater ecosystems in the world. These activities include mechanical changes such as damming or drainage as well as chemical effects like eutrophication and pollution, all with some effects on fish communities. Against this background of massive, worldwide and direct human impacts on freshwater ecosystems, the effects of fish introductions may seem to have only very modest effects on fish communities (Fernando, 1991). However, the increasing concern about the loss of global biodiversity and the recent mass extinction of haplochromine cichlids in Lake Victoria associated with the introduction of the piscivorous Nile perch (Witte et al., 1992; Chapters 2–11) has led to renewed research efforts on the effects of species introductions, especially in relation to commercial exploitation.
