Abstract

As there is no evidence for any shear along, or major extension across, the Ethiopian Rift, the spreading histories of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden should be very similar. To test this, magnetic anomaly profiles for the two regions are converted to the pole for direct comparison. There appear to be some considerable differences and possible reasons for these are discussed.
