Part of the book series: The Families and Genera of Vascular Plants ((FAMILIES GENERA,volume 2))

Abstract

Trees, with vessel-less wood. Leaves spiral, simple, margin serrate, stipules absent or small and adnate to the petiole. Indumentum absent. Flowers in raceme-like aggregates or spikes, bisexual, actinomorphic or disymmetric, yellowish; perianth reduced: either very thin and scarcely vascularised or recognisable only in primordial stages; stamens about 40–70 or 4, with apiculate, basifixed, tetrasporangiate, latrorse anthers; each theca opening by two valves; carpels 4–17, syncarpous, with free styles, semi-inferior, dorsal part of ovary horizontally extended at anthesis, with many sunken stomata and nectariferous; ovules 5–30 per carpel, lateral, in 2 series, anatropous, apotropus, bitegmic, crassinucellar. Fruits capsules; seeds small with chalazal, apical, and lateral wing-like extensions; endosperm abundant; embryo straight, small, dicotyledonous.
