Rat Pup Ultrasonic Vocalizations: An Ethologically Relevant Behaviour Responsive to Anxiolytics

  • Chapter
Animal Models in Psychopharmacology

Summary

Rat pups emit ultrasonic calls during brief periods of social isolation. These calls are reduced by most clinically anxiolytic compounds and increased by several different classes of anxiogenics. In addition to detecting anxiolytic efficacy, this behaviour may be a useful tool for studying selective aspects of the neurobiology of anxiety. It should be noted however that pharmacologic results with rat pup studies depend on both the ontogeny of the neurochemical system involved and the maturity of various factors affecting pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
