Abstract
The interpretation of the textures of igneous rock, that is the description and analysis of crystal morphology, crystal faces, crystal intergrowths, zoning, and crystal distributions, is essential to understanding rock fabric. Rock and mineral textures reflect the interaction of complex growth and dissolution processes controlled by physical and chemical processes that are at best poorly understood. Mineral morphology or habit is described strictly in qualitative terms (e.g., acicular, equant, ramified), as is mineral crystallinity (euhedral, etc.). The record of chemical variation within crystals (zoning) is also characterized in very qualitative terms.
