Abstract
Few areas of biological research have been more frustrating than the efforts to derive a rational explanation of the mechanism of action of the thyroid hormone(s) (TH). A huge and bewildering array of observations has been published and has generated more confusion than clarification. The difficulty of successfully integrating these data has been compounded by the use of a wide range of TH dosages, from physiological (10−10 to 10−8 M) to pharmacological (up to 10−6 M) to toxic (>10−6 M); by the variation in animal condition, from completely athyroid to euthyroid to hyperthyroid; and by the use of systems varying from pure enzymes to whole animals, frequently on variable diets. The object of this chapter will be to resolve the actions of TH into two major roles and trace their development in terms of the metabolic needs and developmental requirements of all classes of vertebrates with particular emphasis on their role in amphibian metamorphosis (Shellabarger, 1964).
