Earth and Environmental Sciences: River Basin Water Resources Assessment, Modeling, Protection, Optimization and Management

Rivers might be local, regional, or international. They are the main source of freshwater for many countries worldwide. The protection of river basin water resources and their optimization for the benefit of the beneficiaries along the rivers are of special importance due to the optimization of agricultural productivity and the saving of lives and industries. This Topical Collection aims to publish peer-reviewed original research on quantitative and qualitative research concerning river basin management, its challenges and opportunities. Challenges may include (but not limited to) climate change impacts, variations in habitats and biodiversity, variation of water levels and flows in rivers, the impact of mega structures on downstream countries, chemicals in the water environment, and various forms of pollution in river systems (e.g., plastic pollution, pollution from abandoned mines, pollution from agriculture and rural areas, pollution from towns, cities and transport, as well as industrial wastewater pollution), among others.

Researchers from everywhere are invited to submit original research articles and systematic review articles. Articles may address but are not limited to any of the following topics using one or more scientific methodological approaches:

- Flood risk analysis, its reduction, and possible natural-based flood management.

- Enhancements of habitats and biodiversity in rivers and water bodies.

- Optimal operation of river lakes and reservoirs via modeling of reservoirs’ operation.

- Sustainability of river basins and the improvement of agricultural productivity within them.

- Analysis and prediction of extreme flows (floods and droughts).

- Dam engineering studies and analysis of various measurements (dam monitoring).

- Interaction between river basin flow and groundwater.

- River basin water environment, sources of pollution, measurements and analysis, protection measures.

- River basin catchment planning, management and partnerships.

- River deltas challenges and opportunities.

- Utilizing modeling, AI, IoT, GIS, and RS tools to optimize river basin resources and management.

- Optimal allocation of river basin water resources.
