Special Issue: In Honor of Joe Vinen

William Frank ("Joe") Vinen, a pioneer of low temperature physics, died on 8 June 2022 at Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Vinen's contribution to physics, and to low temperature physics in particular, has been internationally recognized. The name "Vinen" remains attached to three concepts in the superuid literature: Vinen equation, the Hall-Vinen-Bekharevic-Khalatnikov (HVBK) equations, and Vinen turbulence. The first is the equation, postulated by Vinen using physical arguments, which describes the time evolution (generation, decay and steady state) of the density of vortex lines in a heat current. The second is the generalization of the two-uid equations of Landau and Tisza to the presence of vortex lines described as a continuum. The HVBK equations were originally derived to describe rotating helium; then have been applied successfully to Taylor-Couette flow and, as an approximation, even to turbulence. In 1963 Vinen was awarded the Simon Memorial Prize with Henry Hall. In 1973 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1978, 1980 and 2005 he was respectively awarded the Holweck Prize of the Institute of Physics and the French Physical Society, the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society, and the Guthrie Medal and Prize of the Institute of Physics. In 2008 Vinen received an honorary doctorate from Charles University of Prague. There are 155 publication listed under Vinen’s name on Web of Science, with more 6200 citations, 30 papers published in JLTP, including some very highly cited papers such as Quantum turbulence, JLTP 128, 167-231 (2002) with 434 citations. L. Skrbek is the most frequent coauthor (30 publications) of Joe Vinen, C.F. Barenghi coauthored 7 articles, and both of them have been for several years members of his research group in Birmingham, UK. We therefore believe that, based on these facts, a Special Issue of JLTP is due, with C.F. Barenghi and L. Skrbek as Guest Editors . Both of them are members of the Editorial Board of JLTP and served as Guest Editors for JLTP before. The preliminary work is already under way, so far there is an agreement for at least eleven articles for this Special Issue (one already submitted) by internationally recognized low temperature physicists, collaborators of Joe Vinen on topics such as general superfluidity, quantum turbulence, two-dimensional systems of electron and ions on the surface of superfluid helium and supercondictivity.
