Engineering: Combining Numerical Computation and Geometric Modelling

"Numerical computation is nowadays a crucial element of using effective algorithms for geometric modelling. There are many disciplines of science, where the geometrical models are the base for research. The construction of a proper geometric model is usually the first and the most difficult problem. This is particularly important for complex geometric models, which reflect complicated geometry like it is for instance in case of living entities. The research is often combined with structural analysis. Because the geometrical models have to evolve during the numerical simulation of analyzed phenomena, the construction of geometric models becomes a problem in itself. A perfect example can be here trabecular bone remodelling simulation or topology optimization. Moreover, algorithms and numerical procedures developed in one research area can be successfully used in another. The Topical Collection should gather and show the current state of progress in various fields of research, where combining numerical computation and geometric modelling is present. The contributions, dealing with following topics are welcome: exploration of complex data (biomedical, others) and geometric modelling; automatic segmentation of tissues; 3D reconstruction, especially reconstruction of the tissues; finite element mesh generation - methods and tools; conversion of topology optimization results into parametric CAD models; isogeometric analysis; computer aided geometric design; shape optimization; multi-resolution techniques for modeling heterogeneous materials; discrete differential geometry; descriptive geometry; and similar."

  • Michal Nowak

    Michał Nowak is Professor of Structural Mechanics at the Division of Virtual Engineering on Poznan University of Technology. His main research interests include: optimal design, topology optimization, aeroelasticity and biomechanics. He acts as a reviewer for many high-ranked international journals, editor of Journal of Mechanical and Transport Engineering and member of the Editorial Board of AIMS Bioengineering journal. He is also leading author of Cosmoprojector, structural optimization system coupled with aeroelastic analysis, developed within the EU FP5, EU FP7 and Polish National Science Centre research projects (cosmoprojector.eu).
