Mediterranean diet and health of older people

The goal of this Article Collection is to stimulate sharing knowledge about the role of Mediterranean Diet (MD) on longevity and health of older individuals. Specifically, we aim to further advance our understanding on the mechanisms underlying the association between MD and reduction of morbidity and mortality for the main chronic diseases affecting the aged population. Particular interest is devoted to the effect of MD patterns on the microbiome’s diversity and on the biomarkers associated to longevity and health. Moreover, special attention should be posed to the broader concept of MD as a lifestyle, not only as a dietary pattern, and therefore studies looking at the combined effects of diet and physical activity in older individuals would be welcome.
