Monocrotophos is an alkenyl phosphate chemically named 4-(methylamino)-4-oxobut-2-en-2-yl ester of dimethyl phosphate. Some of the physical properties of this compound are colorless crystals with a mild ester odor and solubility in water. It is used as an insecticide with high oral and mild cutaneous toxicity. The suppression of ChE activities is the toxicologically relevant route of this compound’s action, which leads to the accumulation of neurotransmitter acetylcholine, ultimately leading to the excitation of cholinergic, proving the classical pattern of this compound’s poisoning. Human poisoning associated with monocrotophos shows a pattern of reversible paralysis of cranial nerves, weakening of thoracic muscles, and difficulty in respiration.
