Abstract
African countries mapped out ad hoc agreements under the former Organization of African Union (OAU). Arrangements have been made in the past for resolving conflicts of all kinds on the continent. The Device is one of the several initiatives for Conflict Prevention Management and Resolution (MCPMR). Following the OAU’s first successes, primarily in the field of the independence of the majority of African states, it was then determined that the OAU’s Charter required revision, which resulted in the creation of the African Union (AU) Constitutive Act, which was finally launched in 2002. The AU members understood early on that the scourge of conflicts in Africa was a significant barrier to the expansion and development of the continent. Due to this, the article aims to discuss the various pillars of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA). All of the major AU mechanisms for fostering stability, security and peace on the continent are together referred to as the APSA. With the ongoing crisis in Sudan, and the recent events in Mali, Tunisia, and Guinea, the primary goal of this work is to show that, despite APSA having been in operation for about 20 years, there is still much that needs to be done to end the plaque of violence in Africa. It is impossible to overstate the importance of APSA if it is thoroughly planned and carried out such that recommendations can be made as the need arises.
