Abstract
Beginning in the mid-seventh century, the birthplace of the powerful and far-reaching Persian civilization, the Iranian Plateau, was first occupied by Arabs, and thereafter Hephthalites, Seljuk Turks, Khwarizmis, Mongols and Turkmens, respectively, took turns as the region’s rulers. As a conveyor of culture, Persian civilization continued to exist, but the Persian Empire and monarchy were interrupted for almost a full millennium.
