Abstract

Greater Central Asia includes all of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan—commonly referred to as “the Stans”—and the Republic of Mongolia, as well as parts of Russia, China, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and India. To understand this complex region in the twenty-first century, it's important to have a basic grasp of its convoluted history.
