Abstract
The correct understanding of environmental conditions, such as weather and groundwater level, is important for tropical peatland forest management. The IHI Corporation developed a real-time monitoring system equipped with a “high density remote weather observation system” named POTEKA (Point TEnki KAnsoku in Japanese, where “Tenki” means weather, and “Kansoku” means observation). POTEKA has the capability to observe seven types of weather elements, including temperature, air pressure, humidity, sunshine, wind velocity and direction, rain detection, and precipitation. Power charged by solar panels and mobile phone network usage allows us to place POTEKA anywhere. The observed weather data, to be transferred to the cloud server, are accessible anytime and anywhere through the web. This cloud-based monitoring allows us to conduct remote quality checks and statistical analyses and to issue alerts when the monitored data, including the POTEKA status, exceed the limits previously specified. In addition, sPOTEKA provides the capabilities of groundwater level measurement and satellite network communication. Continuous monitoring of the groundwater level is essential for peatland forest management to prevent wildfire and to keep plantation trees healthy. As sPOTEKA consists of satellite network communication, it is possible to set sPOTEKA in remote areas. The base station of sPOTEKA collects data from monitor stations and sends it to the cloud server (sPOTEKA-NET) through the satellite network. The weather radio network is used to communicate between the base station and monitor stations.
