Abstract
Rapid growth in urbanization and increasing population have accelerated the amount of solid waste generation. It has been reported that 70% of solid waste is unscientifically disposed in landfill sites and open dum** grounds. Solid Waste Management (SWM) is of critical importance to society. Various types of solid waste generated within a city contain a mixture of different types of waste composition. The various activities of solid waste management contributed to the emission of Carbon dioxide, Oxides of Nitrogen, Oxides of Sulphur, Particulate Matter and Short-Lived Climatic Pollutants (SLCPs) such as Methane and Black Carbon. This paper discusses the above pollutants emission for Surat city. Solid Waste Emissions Estimation Tool (SWEET) developed by U. S. Environmental Protection Agency was used to analyze the pollutants. This study also provides knowledge of environmental impacts due to current waste management practices in Surat city. This study’s outcomes may be helpful for selecting alternative scenarios in solid waste management to reduce the environmental pollution in Surat city.
