Abstract

This book begins with Lefebvre’s theory on the production of space, with a localized Shanghai narrative woven throughout all the chapters with a particular focus on the period since the 1980s, during which capitalized production of space has radically altered Shanghai’s socio-geographical landscape, but spatial practices aiming at residential communities are always ongoing. In the last decade, the wind has shifted in the direction of interactive community empowerment practices that are accessible and beneficial to the grassroots.
