Rock mechanics is a basic subject that investigates the theories on the law of deformation and failure of rock and rock mass under the effects of various force fields and their practical application. It is a branch of mechanics and a borderline science in between solid mechanics, structural geology, engineering geology, and mining. It is one of the important theoretical bases for modern mining engineering. It is intended to guide mining engineering, so as to make use of rock mass failure in a controllable manner, minimize energy consumption during mining, enhance efficiency, propose the solutions to prevent and eliminate the hazards of rock stratum pressure, and exploit the underground resources in a safe and economically efficient manner.
