Molecular Marker Techniques

Abstract

The molecular marker system has transformed the outcome of crop breeding by overcoming the shortcomings of conventional breeding. Molecular breeding is fast, not time-bound, precise, and efficient as compared to traditional breeding which is time-consuming, time- and season-bound, and less efficient. Advancement in genetics, breeding, genome selection, and editing has led to deeper understanding of the wide application of molecular markers for crops. Several types of molecular markers have been developed and deployed to gear up crop improvement in almost all crop plants. In this chapter, we have discussed major types of molecular markers used commonly like RFLP, RAPD, AFLP, SSR, SNP, and their application in crop breeding since these are the root of advanced markers used for marker-assisted selection, genome editing, and next-generation sequencing.
