Abstract

External trade, also known as foreign trade, simply means exchange of goods and services across national boundaries. It is also termed international trade. Before the emergence of nation-states, external trade dealt with material commodities such as slaves, palm produce, timber, gold, ivory, liquor, etc. This chapter presents the dynamics of external trade in colonial West African societies.
