Abstract

A rectangular microstrip patch antenna, covering multiband frequencies for 5G base stations is proposed. The antenna structure consists of main radiating rectangular patch, substrate layer, ground plane and feeding line. The substrate chosen is FR4 epoxy with dielectric constant 4.4 and substrate thickness is of 0.8 mm. The microstrip patch antenna resonates at four frequencies. The obtained return losses are − 30.43 dB, − 17.38 dB, − 22.65 dB, − 21.31 dB and the Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) are 1.06, 1.89, 1.15, 1.18 at 1.27 GHz, 1.56 GHz, 2.83 GHz and 4.46 GHz, respectively. The simulated results show that VSWR is less than 2, which means the antenna has a good impedance matching. The return loss is improved by 14.97, 36.57% for frequencies 2.83 and 1.27 GHz and the gain is increased by 2.25 dB for this design.
