Juni 1901 in Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh, in einer kultivierten bengalischen Familie, war Raj Chandra der älteste Sohn von Pratap Chandra Bose, einem Armeearzt, und Ushangini Devi, mit drei jüngeren Geschwistern. Seine frühe Kindheit verbrachte er in Rohtak, einer kleinen Stadt in Punjab (jetzt in Haryana).
