Abstract
Franco represented that conservative worldview that saw “oriental” peoples as not only inferior but incapable of ever catching up to the West, with Japan’s defeat as proof. The fascist view agreed with the idea of oriental inferiority, not with their inability to catch up to the West, because Japan’s rise reflected their own desire to rise socially in the country. And although the World War’s context was unrepeatable, such perceptions continue to weigh heavily on Spain-Japan relations. The abruptness remains.
