Abstract

Benign cervical lesions encompass a broad spectrum of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic processes. This chapter addresses pathologic considerations in the cervix, whether seen on biopsy, curettage, or incidentally encountered during a hysterectomy for another process altogether. Many of these entities are uncommon to exceedingly rare in the cervix and may be encountered in other Müllerian locations more frequently. The chapter includes recent changes and updates in the literature as well as historical perspectives and approaches. Discussed in detail are a multitude of metaplastic processes, ectopic tissues, glandular and nonglandular lesions, reactive and reparative processes, pigmented lesions, pregnancy associated changes, and other miscellaneous entities that may be encountered in the cervix. Careful consideration of clinical history, symptoms, gross findings, and other patient information is essential when evaluating these cervical lesions and considering appropriate differential diagnoses.
