The Constructed Biodiversity, Forest Management and Use of Fire in Ancient Amazon: An Archaeological Testimony on the Last 14,000 Years of Indigenous History

Global Ecology in Historical Perspective

Abstract

Tropical rainforests have retained an image of being pristine environments scarcely occupied by humans over the millennia. Archaeological research carried out in the last thirty years in the Amazon has contributed to changing this picture. In this chapter we aim to explore some of the patterns revealed by archaeology as it studies records of human occupation in the Amazon that span most of the Holocene, particularly the continuities and changes in environmental management, accumulated in the form of knowledge among traditional populations, and materialized in the current floral biodiversity of the region.
