Microfiber Pollution

Abstract

Though the impact of microfiber pollution on the environment is irreversible, proper knowledge of their generation and control can be used to mitigate the impact of microfiber pollution. In this aspect, this chapter outlines various mitigation strategies that are adapted and need to be considered in the future to reduce microfiber release. The chapter lists the potential changes in manufacturing practices that will have a positive impact in terms of microfiber emission control from the source. Further, by focusing on laundry, how mitigation initiatives can be performed to control the emission by using suitable laundry or machine aids to prevent the leaching of microfiber into sewage and the environment. The last section of the chapter enlists the various sustainable practices that can be adapted at the disposal stage of clothing and textile along with regulations related to microfiber emission control.
