Ethnic Religious Minorities in Iran

Abstract

In recent decades, Sunni Muslims in Iran (estimated at 8–10% of the total population) have sought to reconfigure their status by creating a political bloc that crosses the ethnic, regional, tribal, and other differences that have previously divided them. This chapter will examine how Sunni sectarian entrepreneurs in Iran have used the framework of the Islamic Republic to achieve this, essentially using Iranian national identity and the failure of the state to live up to its ideals to foster a shared sense of community among the diversity of Iranian Sunni societies.
