Abstract
This chapter reviews research and legal perspectives on early child development and corporal punishment from a global view. The chapter begins with a description of the importance of preschool education and early childhood care, and then analyzes conflicting perspectives on the use of corporal punishment generally and with preschool-aged children. Next, research on the prevalence of corporal punishment and attitudes about it across diverse societies is presented. Finally, the chapter discusses the international legal framework to protect children from corporal punishment and other forms of violence, particularly the United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child of 1990 and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child of 2003, and articulates moral and religious arguments against the use of corporal punishment. Thus, this chapter argues against corporal punishment, generally and with young (preschool-aged) children, in light of its serious harms to children and negative repercussions for society.
