Abstract
Fast-track total knee arthroplasty (FT-TKA) is a concept that aims at early rehabilitation and mobilization, thereby reducing complications and length of hospital stay. It has led to improvement in clinical and functional outcomes and requires multidisciplinary care for early patient recovery and satisfaction. The success of this concept depends on proper surgical planning, education, and counseling of patient and family along with optimization of comorbidities. Adequate perioperative and postoperative analgesia must be maintained along with using minimally invasive surgical approach to reduce the physiological stress. Early mobilization with supervised physiotherapy is vital in the postoperative period for better functional outcome and reduces the risk of complications, i.e., thromboembolism, pulmonary complications, and delayed wound healing.
We recommend that for the success of FT-TKA, a patient-centered approach with their active partnership and a collaborative teamwork is of utmost importance. Apt patient selection, use of multimodal analgesia, surgical considerations such as using minimally invasive, computer-navigated approach, refraining from the use of drains and urinary catheters, monitored physiotherapy and follow-up plays a crucial role for rapid recovery and reduced patient morbidity.
