Approach to Lower Limb Oedema

Abstract

Compression encompasses a range of therapies used to provide an externally applied graduated pressure greater at the ankle than the knee aiming to improve venous function and decrease lower limb swelling (Lim and Davies, Graduated compression stockings [Internet], 2020). Graduated compression stockings are elastic stockings that exert the greatest degree of compression at the ankle, with the degree of compression gradually decreasing up the garment (Lim and Davies, Graduated compression stockings [Internet], 2020). The indications for graduated compression stockings include symptom relief in post-thrombotic syndrome, chronic venous disease, lipedema, and lymphedema. Investigational studies into the use of stockings to prevent post-thrombotic syndrome are underway.
