Abstract

With the population ageing transition affecting the demographic dividend, there is an urgent need to examine the factors contributing to extending the duration of work life. The chapter examines the factors of withdrawal among older adults from workforce due to reasons related to health, age, and retirement. Multivariable logistic regression models were applied to explore the effect of potential factors in determining withdrawal from the workforce. Older adults with socioeconomic advantage (more years of education due to retirement and higher economic status due to health reasons) had higher odds of withdrawal from workforce, whereas older adults with lowest income earning had higher odds of withdrawal from workforce due to age concerns and health reasons. Older adults with poor self-rated health (SRH) had higher odds of withdrawal from the workforce due to age concerns and health reasons than older adults with good SRH. The findings suggest that for extending the duration of work life, policies that target human capital investment (primarily in education and health) among older adults with poor income earning are required. The older workforce with higher socioeconomic status who are retired may be potentially used as a source of productive demographic dividend.
